Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery
Chronic sinusitis is an inflammation of the lining of the sinuses — the air-filled cavities that surround the nose and eyes — lasting three months or more. It’s most commonly caused by bacterial, viral and/or microbial infections, but it often will not go away with antibiotics, decongestants or nasal sprays alone.
In order to clear the blocked sinus passageways, the head and neck surgeons at Crestwood Medical Center use a minimally invasive surgical balloon technique like the one used to block arteries during a balloon angioplasty. During this procedure, doctors thread a guide wire equipped with a tiny balloon into the nostrils and up to the area of blockage. Then, they inflate the balloon just enough to open the passageway. The balloon is then deflated and removed.
Crestwood Medical Center was the first in North Alabama to offer this technology in sinus surgery.
