Commonly used to treat cancerous or other abnormal growths, radiation therapy exposes diseased cells to radiation to destroy them. In some cases, tumors are treated with radiation alone. In others, radiation therapy can precede or follow surgery or be used in conjunction with chemotherapy to get rid of leftover tumor cells. Regardless of the type, radiation therapy at Crestwood Medical Center is performed by an experienced staff of radiation oncologists, radiation therapy nurses, dosimetrists and technologists dedicated to making treatment as successful as possible.
Crestwood Medical Center’s cancer care facility uses additional progressive treatment technologies to enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy. These include the linear accelerator (LINAC) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), which are used to deliver uniform doses of high-energy x-rays to the region of the patient’s tumor, while preventing other areas of the body from receiving unwanted doses.
